Description

The arrival in Melbourne of George Britton Halford on 23 December 1862 signalled the establishment of medical education and research in Physiology in Australia. For a century and a half the Department of Physiology at The University of Melbourne has been at the forefront of research and teaching in this essential discipline.

“Melbourne University’s Department of Physiology has gained international recognition for its outstanding research and teaching. It was a pioneering institution. Now, Juliet Flesch has written, with passion and insight, the history of a great achievement and the controversial characters who ran it in Life’s Logic.” —Barry Jones

“An outstanding university department like Physiology is the result of many decades of brilliant academic research and teaching, skilled and dedicated professional staff, and legions of bright students. Juliet Flesch has given us a treasure-trove of stories of those who made the department great, in a history worthy of the department itself.” —Peter McPhee

Dr Juliet Flesch is an Honorary Fellow in the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies at The University of Melbourne, a librarian of thirty years’ standing and author of From Australia with Love: A history if Modern Australian Romance Novels; Minding the Shop, a history of the University’s Department of Property & Buildings, and co-author, with Peter McPhee of 150 Years, 150 Stories: Brief biographies of one hundred and fifty remarkable people associated with The University of Melbourne, as well as other books, scholarly articles and chapters.
