Description

The aptly surnamed Colonel John Edward Newell Bull was an influential figure on the Victorian goldfields. An Imperial soldier, social reformer, engineer, magistrate, goldfields administrator and civic leader, he was every bit a man of the times.
In the early 1850s, the Victorian goldfields were a hotbed of unrest, crime and change. John Bull took a surprisingly liberal approach to digger agitation. He recognised that the miners were not generally anti-Establishment, and their complaints were not without cause.
Bull personally contributed to the establishment of the town of Castlemaine. He was involved in setting up the local municipalities, hospitals, schools, churches, sporting clubs, the local Volunteer Rifle Corps, and much more.
