Mr Speaker! gives an insight into the creation of the Australian federation and its first 75 years from the perspective of the lives of the first Speakers of the House of Representatives. The Speakers were diverse and at times eccentric, distinct personalities whose lives represent the character of the Australian federation in its formative years. Harker-Mortlock explores the lives of some of the great unsung heroes of Australia’s political history, whose stories cast a previously unseen light upon the events and personalities of their time.
