Tony Coady’s In Hindsight charts a colourful, often surprising picture of a philosophical and intellectual career and life that began with no background in such a world.
It explores aspects of the thought, personal characters, eccentricities, influences and achievements of many outstanding philosophers and other intellectuals that Coady encountered world-wide and often befriended. It also ties his narration to the sociopolitical contexts of the times and attempts to chart the development, faults and merits of the important analytic philosophy movement from the 1960s onwards. As a firm reformist (or ‘liberal’) Catholic intellectual, he also discusses aspects of the state of the Catholic Church over that period with particular emphasis on the church’s failings and successes in its sometimes contradictory attempts to adjust its teachings and practices to the good and bad developments in the contemporary world.
