Description
Fabulous Follies, Frauds and Fakes by author and goldsmith Robert Baines continues on from the mysterious More Amazing Schmuck Stories (ASP, 2010). A book of three new jewellery stories from his Living Treasure: Master of Australian Craft exhibition, that projects jewellery as documents of our material culture should be read with caution as linear narration is confused by myth, riddle, puzzle and possible subversions of jewellery history. Finely crafted jewels from Robert Baines’s collection are posed as riddles that lead to questions of authenticity and sabotage.
Robert Baines has profoundly shaped Australian jewellery, object-making and international historical scholarship. His works challenge our conception of the world as much as they delight with their technical brilliance. Baines is an exhibiting artist-goldsmith and his work is held in many prestigious collections across the globe, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Musee des Arts Dé coratifs, Paris; Schmuckmuseum, Pforzheim; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg; and the National Gallery of Australia. An emeritus professor at RMIT University, Baines also teaches gold and silversmithing.
Baines’s publications include: Partyline (RMIT Press, 2004); Treasure room Australia – Schatzkammer Australien (ASP, 2009); More Amazing Schmuck Stories (ASP, 2010); and Australian Jewellery Topos (ASP, 2010).
