Tourism is a major industry of Central Australia today. It is of national and international significance and interestingly the Hermannsburg Mission, the Aboriginal people and the military have each played a part in its history, consolidation and expansion, as have Federal and Territory administrations, interest groups and the interplay among tour operators.

Jim Goulding tells the story of Centralian tourism’s remarkable development from its foundations in the make-do commercial enterprises of the 1920s until the 1970s, when the Territory became self-governing and Australia began to emerge as a destination of choice for international travellers.
