Named in the nineteenth century after the mountain range that separates France and Spain, Australia’s Pyrenees has vineyards that produce fabulously rich dry red wines.
Early colonists hailed this picturesque setting as ‘the natural garden’ of Victoria and farmed sheep and mined for gold. Vignerons came later in the nineteenth century, but were at first unsuccessful. The promise of winemaking was however always there, and in recent decades it has been more than fulfilled. The Pyrenees winemakers have a fine reputation for unique red, white and sparkling wines, and more achievements are on the way as local and international capital and expertise combine to create one of Australia’s and the new world’s truly exciting wine regions. But the success of wine in these parts is no overnight wonder and this story has a vital human dimension. The international reputation of Australian wine owes much to the efforts of new generation vignerons like those of the Pyrenees.
